Youth Mental Health First Aid

Through a mix of presentation, discussions, self-reflection and group activities, completion of the two day Youth MHFA course, delivered by a quality assured trainer who has attended the MHFA Instructor Training programme accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health, qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider giving you:
- An in-depth understanding of young people's mental health and factors that can affect wellbeing
- Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
- Confidence to step in, reassure and support a young person in distress
- Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
- Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support - whether that’s self-help resources, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix - engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate
- Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue/disability to thrive
- Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing
You will receive a certificate to confirm your training as well as the five-step MHFA action plan and comprehensive manual on completion of the course.

Why Mental Health First Aid?
Provide support
1 in 9 children aged 5-15 have a mental health disorder. (Mental Health Foundation, 2017)
Prevent death
Suicide is the leading cause of death for those aged 5-19. (MHFA England, 2020)
Prevent illness
50% of mental health problems are established by age 14 and 75% by age 24. (Mental Health Foundation, 2005)
Equip yourself/staff
In an average group of 30 15-year-olds, 6 may be self-harming . (MHFA England, 2020)
